okay, so i've decided to learn the violin.... or the viola... :S
i really got passionate about learning and just listening to the music, from watching La Corda d'Oro an instrumental anime... but that's beside the point.
what i understand now is that there are more leading parts for violin, and just more music in general than the viola. the violin is smaller, thus easier to hold. i don't really know how much music there is for viola, but i know it's an alto instrument, so it will have more harmonizing parts, that's what i don't like, and its bigger....
i'm leaning towards the violin, but i know that viola players are less common everywhere....
please help me!! any info and opinions would be great! ^_^
Viola or violin!?!?
viola for there is never enough people who play them where there are plenty of people who will play violin

Reply:I think the viola would be much much better. Yes, I'm a violist, but this is not biased.
1) Violists are in demand everywhere. More than the violin (obviously), the cello, and the bass (in general they're in bands).
2) The violin is a bit screechy, much more than the viola. For the sake of the most important thing to a musician (sound) viola is better off.
3) It's not too competitive. Also kind of goes with #1.
4) It doesn't matter if a viola is bigger, since they have an excuse for unproper etiquette since it is so heavy. But it's easy to hold it right anyways.
If you played piano before, you might want the violin since it has the same clef. Or the cello would work too.
Reply:The violin, that's my second favorite instrument, I play classical guitar, as you can tell I'm a string person, someday I'm going to get a violin and learn to play it, I think it's a very beautiful instrument, I don't care how many there are in the world, there's never enough when you love something, my all time favorite for violins is the "Four Seasons", by Vivaldi, it doesn't get any better then that !!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Start with violin to get the technique down. You can always easily switch to viola later.
Reply:ok i play the viola. I have played for 5 years. I have been in over 10 different orchestras. ANd let me say that there are good parts for the viola. The violin may have a bit more but us violists do play. Most of the time when you do have melodic parts you play with the 2nd violins. Sometimes cello.
Which in my opinion is cool......And yes the viola is slighty larger than the viola. My viola is 16 inches ,,,,,, yeah its bigger than the violin but you get use to it. And if you go to the right store you CAN choose the right size viola for you PLUS if you get a good shoulder rest which i think you would really want.....you wouldnt really notice the size of your instrument. Another thing is that not many people know what the viola is.....i know i didn't when i just started playing. So by playing the viola you can introduce the instrument to people who don't know...Besides not to be mean but the violin is sooooo typical. Really! if you look in a program and look for violins you have about 50 first violins and about 65 second second vilins...that is in a full orchestra. So by playing the viola people who don't know what it is will become interested in you and what to learn about it.....and at that time you can show off your skills. Hope i helped!
Reply:I understand your want to be "in demand" as an instrumentalist. The thing is, no matter what instrument you play, if you are passionate about music, it will show in your performance, and that is what matters. If I had to make the decision myself, I'd go for violin, just because I tend to perform on a high level in music. If you are unsure of your musical abilities, then you might be happier in the background in quartets and symphonies.
If you like the spotlight, then go for violin. If you like supporting roles, go for the viola.
Reply:My sister plays violin. It deepends on if you want a soft light sound or a deep sound. Personally I feel the violin is too played out and I like the sound of the viola. To me the viola is the best of both worlds: Cello and violin. But this is up to you. Choose the one that you feel completes you
