What causes a violin or viola string to 'uncoil'?

You know how when a violin (or viola) string uncoils... well, I don't think that the right word, but its when. the outermost part of the string becomes undone. What's that called? Why does it happen?

Is there any way to prevent it from happening?

Thank you!

What causes a violin or viola string to 'uncoil'?
when you tighten your strings you have to make sure that you're peg is pushed in as much as it can if not the strings will slowly become loose
Reply:Do you mean at the top through the pegs or on the neck of the violin. As the strings age or are wound to tightly they can pop or unravel

Edit: oh, well I've never had that happen....do you mean the metal is unraveling.....are they cheap strings?

Where can I find gifts that feature a viola?

I've seen Bratsche's Viola Bazaar and most of the cafepress-related sites, but I'm wondering if there's other sites to find viola gifts.

Where can I buy a viola case in Singapore?

The case for my viola is falling apart, I need a new one!!!

Where can I buy a viola case in Singapore?
Look in the yellow pages under "violin" (to find a luthier shop), check any music stores, or you might contact someone at the Mandeville Music School. See:

http://www.mandevillemusic.com/
Reply:hi, have you tried searching at any musical instruments stores?or maybe you can try check out this local site 88db and search for the viola case that you want, you might also want to try search AMBERCRAFT VIOLINS for the viola case
Reply:go down to penisula plaza whereby there are many shops selling musical instruments. Is cheaper there. There is two doors, come in from the correct door and go to the ground floor.

Bad Teeth

The sound post inside of viola came off =(?

do you think that my neighborhood music store could fix it also some paint chipped of the viola do you think that all this is covered by warranty???? (thanks!!!)=)

The sound post inside of viola came off =(?
I am a violist, and I know that a sound post coming off is a major thing. The question that I would have to ask is, "how did the sound post come off?" because in many cases, that is what would determine the warranty question.

I don't know how good your local music store is, but if they make instruments there (string instruments), then they should be able to fix it.

If they don't, find a Violin Maker, and they would be the ones to be able to put in a new sound post

Orchestra dorks ueber alles
Reply:I play violin, so I know all about this. The sound post coming out...that's a tough thing to fix. What you can do is ask if they can fix it before you actually let them fix it (or they'll charge you), and if they can't...that's bad. I really hope they can! I don't think chipped paint will be included in the warranty, because it's not really a thing that happens over time - it's more of an accident. The best of luck! I wish you the best! Hope I helped, Darlin'! =)
Reply:Hey, a viola is not a car. You have paint on your viola?? Maybe, varnish, but not paint (I hope). Warranty? Again, it's not a car.

The sound post didn't "come off," it fell down, probably. An easy repair, probably not very expensive to fix. Don't play the instrument until you have the sound post reset.
Reply:They should be able to fix it, however about the warranty: if there is one you should know about it when you bought it.

I plan on purchasing a viola and I need some help... Any experts?

The only problem is that I'm kind of on a budget. How much money do you think I'll have to spend to purchase a fairly decent viola and bow that would get me through my first couple years of high school?

I plan on purchasing a viola and I need some help... Any experts?
Hello! I am a violist (trained in Chicago area, does semi-professional sub work, freelance, has professional string quartet) I can't tell you names of shops because of geography, but I can give you some advice at least.

I assume that you have private teacher, and that person is the one you should ask about shops. Especially when you are dealing with shops that are found in cities, you run across the problem of "regraded" instruments where a dealer has taken an old and crappy instrument, hollowed it out so that it sounds better, only to have in collapse a short while later, depending on how often you play. Also older violas with new bass bars installed in them may have problems as well. Worse comes to worse, email a member of a local symphony and ask them about shops who will not blindside you.

When you do have a few reputable shop names(which you should get a couple...comparing prices is a must, and don't be afraid to bargain down your price either) go and see what they have. A good intermediate level viola (you said your current one is $700 which would be student quality) should run you about $1,500-$3000 maybe $4000, depending on what you want to use your instrument for or if you have already decided to get ready for a life in the classical music industry. I myself learned on a $500, had a $2,500 intermediate, and purchased a $20,000 viola as my freelance quality instrument.

Many of these instruments may be factory punched but hand made, so even if a shop has several instruments by the same maker and the same model, all of those instruments may sound completely different. Sooo, you could get one with $4000 sound quality with a $1500 pricetag if the cut of the wood was perfect and it had a skillful assembler. There are also beautiful older instruments as well and a good shop should be able to point out the ones that will suit your preferences (like whether you want a bright or dark sound). In the end, the one that you want will be obvious to you, and only after you have fallen in love with the instrument should you do closer inspections.

Always always always take instruments out on consignment from shops. That way, when you are trying to decide between a final two or three instruments, you can play them for other people and see how they react in different settings (is it good for solo work, orchestra work, chamber music?).

In the end, do only what feels right. My viola is as individual to me as my own soul, and yours should fit you that perfectly too. It is a big purchase for you to make, and I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Reply:You should not have to spend more than $200 on a beginners outfit ; case , viola and bow.

Make sure you buy it from a proper violin shop so that it has been set up correctly. Don't buy it from a guitar/drum/keyboard music shop.

PS You should have said which City you are in. Perhaps somebody can direct you to a particular music shop and a brand of viola.

Whats the difference between a Viola and a fiddle?

Is a 'fiddle' another name for viola?

Whats the difference between a Viola and a fiddle?
No fiddle is usually another name for violin. A viola is bigger than a violin and is the middle voice of the violin family between the violin (high) and cello (low).

Fiddle v. violin jokes...

"When you are buying it, it's a fiddle. When you are selling it, it's a violin."

"The violin sings, the fiddle dances."

"A fiddle is a violin with attitude."

"What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?" "No one cries when they spill beer on a fiddle."

Viola jokes...

"How is lightning like a violist's fingers?" "Neither one strikes in the same place twice."

"How do you keep your violin from getting stolen?" "Put it in a viola case."

"What's the difference between a violin and a viola? "1. The viola burns longer. 2. The viola holds more beer. 3. You can tune the violin."

"What's the difference between a viola and a coffin?" "The coffin has the dead person on the inside."
Reply:When most people today speak of a fiddle, they are talking about a violin, not a viola.

Historically, just about any instrument played with a bow, especially folk instruments, is called a fiddle. There were renaissance fiddle, corn-stalk fiddle, cigar box fiddle, etc.

You can, as already said, fiddle on a viola, too, and just as with a violin, that usually means playing just about anything other than classical music in the classical style on it. Check out Carol Cook for some viola fiddling.
Reply:Not Much. They are the same basic instrument. Fiddlers generally prefer a flatter curve on the top of the bridge and four fine tuners.
Reply:"Fiddle" is another name for a violin; it's more about the way it is played than about the instrument itself. A viola is a member of the string family of instruments - violin, viola, cello, and bass, corresponding to soprano, alto, tenor, and bass ranges, respectively. The viola is not generally played "fiddle-style;" that is a style of violin music that is often used in country, bluegrass, and Celtic styles of music.
Reply:Yes, the viola can be played as a fiddle...I've done it myself...I've played some Celtic stuff on viola which came off very well. I was really surprised at how easy it was to adapt to the fingerboard after having learned on violin.
Reply:a fiddle is another name for a violin.

violins and violas are different in two ways, first the size. violas are typically slightly bigger. this emites a lower tone..

secondly violins and violas have different strings..

violins have GDAE

Violas have CGDA (this is one octive lower than the violin)

Reply:It's highly doubtful. The viola is not a highly popular instrument: in fact, amongst the standard string instruments, it's far and away the least popular.

You might possibly come across a transcription for violin and piano, and then transcribe the violin for viola. This particular piece is so "generic" to the piano, that I don't think it would really be suitable for transcription to any other instrument.

Good luck in your search, anyway,

Alberich

P.S.-One symphonic work in which the viola plays an almost concerto role, is Hector Berlioz's "Harold in Italy". You might want to take a listen; probably can find it on You Tube.

What classical stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) is most like a bass guitar?

I want to learn bass guitar, and I'm trying to find out how easy it will be to convert from my current knowledge of the viola and cello, to the bass guitar note wise.

What classical stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) is most like a bass guitar?
The Upright bass and Electric bas guitar are both tuned E-A-D-G where the violin, cello etc. are tuned differently. Being that you can read bass clef you'll have that side down. Mainly you'll need to learn to transpose some scales and your right hand (if you are right handed) is going to have a heck of a work out learn to pluck the strings. Lyrically you'll have a good advantage for soloing etc. and a developed ear.
Reply:Because they are all played in the bass cleft, it should be pretty easy to convert. and if you are a violist and/or cellist, the difference in string thickness shouldn't bother you that much. Good luck in learning!

How should I polish my viola?

I want a SAFE way to clean my viola. The wood has a lot of finger prints.

How should I polish my viola?
Omygosh, I don't know what Frank is thinking, but do NOT let Windex get near your instrument! The safest way to clean an instrument is to gently wipe it with a clean, dry piece of soft cotton. The varnish on string instruments is specially made to protect the wood while allowing the instrument to vibrate at the maximum capacity. The varnish can however let in moisture so do not use a wet/damp cloth. Many places sell 'polish' for string instruments. This stuff is crap. It is mostly sold to beginner/young students who think they need it to take care of their instruments. You do not need it, your instrument does not need it, and the shops do not need your money. If you truly feel your instrument needs a good cleaning, find a reliable repair shop that will give your viola a little spa treatment.
Reply:Use a towel and clean it?
Reply:Just buy a violin polish from the violin shop. It only costs about $10 per bottle.

Please do not use any household cleaning products as this may damage the varnish.

Fingerprints would probably just come off with a soft cotton cloth ; I use an old piece of t-shirt.
Reply:You can buy polish at http://sharmusic.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=113...

It works well and it's not very expensive. You, however, as other people have said, just take a towel and clean it. The towel alone wouldn't clean it and using water could damage the look or sound of your instrument.

I hope this helps you!
Reply:How about Windex and a polishing cloth?

Where can I study music (viola performance)?

I'm in my second year of college and a couple years ago, I started playing viola on and off, but I really want to continue music study. Where can I do this? Is there a music school that I don't have to audition for? I'm sure that with my lack of experience, I couldn't get in. Counsel?

Where can I study music (viola performance)?
You say you're in your second year of college... so visit the music building on campus. Ask around and see who you can talk to. Most likely your school will have some type of music program that you can participate in. My suggestion is to take private lessons and join your college's orchestra or a community orchestra.

If you are looking at different schools then the one you are at, you'll probably need to audition to get into their music department. So keep up with private lessons and practicing and you'll be one your way to a good audition. Since you are a beginner, look into schools that maybe are not known for their music school, but still have a good program. Or a school that has a small string program. Those will better your chances of being accepted and you can still learn music skills.
Reply:BYU-Idaho has a very good music program. Not only that, but they have a great Viola program. Dr. Kevin Call is a great instructor for Viola. Also, BYU in Provo is great, and they have the William Primorose Archive of Viola literature there. I am attending BYU-I right now as a Music Education Major with an emphasis in Orchestra and my main instrument being Viola. I actually was not very good when I first auditioned for Dr. Call, but in a few years (and with much hard work and dedication) I am doing a lot better. But mostly, just find a good school and work hard; hard work is what will help the most with anything.

Violas Rule!!
Reply:i have been playing viola for a number of years and many others instruments as well my best advice would be to take lessons and practice good habits. in my viola section i see to many bad habits and over time it will harder to overcome these habits. and dont rely on your fingers too much learn to use your ears alot, with this you learn what the audience is hearing.
Reply:I would suggest a private tutor instead. Contact the music school in a local university and ask for references to private viola teachers. You may be lucky and find the school has lessons taught by students.

viola and violin are not the same one is slightly bigger
Reply:Yes you should. eBay usually has pretty good stuff. I'm not familiar with which one of those would be best but you can email the sellers to ask them about it.
Reply:No! Don't get one it will sound horrible. Go to yopur local music shop and ask to see what second hand ones they have. Mine is second hand but it very good but cost me only £100. I am not sure what this is in dollars. But buy one from a specialised shop.

EDIT: If you don't know this, a viola is slightly bigger than a violin and the violin produces a higher sound. If you don't know how to play any instrument at all, get a teacher. If you know how to play a different instrument you might be able to figure it out for yourself.
Reply:buy all of them
Reply:Hello,I bought a Rothenburg violin off Ebay. I got the tiger stripe maple(it's real maple). It's a really good looking violin. I got it for $60 plus shipping. Not a bad deal.

As it comes out of the box, it is setup for a child probably no older than about 12. If you're an old guy like me, you're going to have to work on it. For one thing, the strings are too close together as they drape over the nut. There was not enough space between the strings for my big fingers. I had to reposition the strings, putting more space between them. Not a hard thing to do, I just used a nail file to cut additional grooves in the nut moving the 2 outside strings closer to the outer edges of the neck, and then eyeballing and readjusting the center 2. I did the same thing where they cross the bridge.

Work on one string at a time, loosen it, make the groove on

the nut and bridge, then retighten. Note that the neck on this particular violin is a bit narrow. If that gives me any problems, I can always add "saddlebag" spacers to the sides of the neck to make it wider. You can pay a "luthier" to do this, or do it yourself. If you hire it done, then expect to drop about $75 bucks to get it done. Additionally, even though the tailpiece is advertised a being ebony, I really think it's plastic.

I'm sure most of the other cheap violins would need similar types of adjusting. But if you have to hire someone to do the adjusting for you, then that kind of defeats the purpose of buying a cheap violin in the first place.Otherwise, the violin seems to sound pretty good to me. Other things to keep in mind, tuning -- It takes about 2 weeks for the neck to "stiffen" so it stays in tune, and normal problems with slipping pegs.

What's better flute or viola?

i have the option of playing one of the two instruments: the flute and the viola, but im having a hard time chosing one.

Which one sounds better, is easier to play, etc.

What's better flute or viola?
I love violin, viola, and cello. Strings have a very special sound to them. Many violinists can play viola, too! There is room for more string players in orchestra and symphony, too.

Make sure to take private lessons to help you enjoy your instrument more, and advance your skills.

Best wishes.
Reply:Well, I was a flute major in college. And I've played bowed strings, including a violone (a big viola-tuned instrument that I play "da gamba"--on my lap, kind of like an octave cello).

Both flute and viola are beautiful instruments. The flute is easier to learn to play at first, tho' both are equally difficult to learn to play really well.

The flute is smaller and easier to carry--I used to tote mine around in the pocket of my overcoat. Top-of-the-line flutes are cheaper. Flutes don't have strings or similar parts that wear out quickly and need regular replacement. Flutes don't need rosin for the bow. The flute uses a relatively natural hand position and physical posture; viola requires bending the left hand in an unnatural twist (something that, if you're not young enough, your bones will never fully accomodate) and the leverage under the left side of the chin means that many violists will develop upper-back orthopedic problems.

Then again, there are fewer good viola players so if you go pro, you can find work easier.

So that's the pro-and-con analysis from where I sit.
Reply:I know you didn't ask but VIOLIN ALL THE WAY!

:D

But if I had to choose between flute and viola it would be viola, I guess because I am a violin player.
Reply:violen
Reply:I love the sound of the viola. It is a beautiful intsrument but it is just too big for me so I learn the violin.

All the string instruments are difficult to play (violin, viola, cello and double bass).

The flute is a much easier instrument to learn but it still requires a lot of hard work and practise to become a good player.

I always prefer the sound of the viola to a flute but which one do you like the sound of ?

Reply:Flute of course -is healthier for your body as playing it does not cause as much neck/shoulder problems as the violin/viola.
Reply:If you want to be wanted and involved in everything go for the Viola. There are too many flute players in this world, but there is always a need for violas. Yes I know you have to put up with jokes but at least you are not one of many all fighting for the few positions available (backstabbing, eye gouging etc). My daughter wanted to play the flute and I said "over my dead body" She ended up on the Bassoon and now she can pick and choose what she wants to do cause there is not much competition. The same goes for you if you become a good viola player. Don't forget to practice!!!

How do you learn a viola part quickly and well?

I'm having trouble with the piece I am playing in orchestra. Any tips on how to learn the fast parts really well. I play viola and I need to learn it before next weekend.

How do you learn a viola part quickly and well?
Practice, Practice, Practice...an old college friend and I would go to the stage on which she had to perform, and she would practice while I studied (very boring science stuff). The music was beautiful when she played well, and helped me to engrain my lessons. When she messed up, it also interrupted me. She understood the profound impact from not only an esthetic nature but also a practical nature. She felt her music and it sounded that way.

Regarding fast movement pieces. These are matters of muscle memory. Go through the steps as slowly as you have to, to make them perfect, and increase speed as you master each note, at each speed. If you mess up at a particular speed, keep repeating until it is perfect.

Do not disconnect your emotional impression from your physical activity. Assess each mistake from the emotional perspective. To master the piece you must connect the emotional with the physical actions. If you have the muscle memory down, God willing you will be able to take the piece to the next level once you have trained the muscle memory.

Good Luck the world could always use another inspired musician.
Reply:Practice until your fingers bleed, theres no easy way.
Reply:I suggest you break it down into the sections you can play and then practice the difficult parts at 1/2 or 1/4 tempo...and practice practice practice.

Good luck!

How do you play a viola?

I play the violin, and want to play the viola! Anyone know how?

How do you play a viola?
I know how to play the viola...
Reply:Well, as a cellist and friend of violinists turned violists I feel partially qualified to answer this. What I do know is that approaching a viola as a violinist, one must be careful. The viola is truly its own instrument. It has this unique voice that is hard to draw from the instrument. Not only does one have to overcome the size obstacle (extending the fingers further, learning the evilness of 2nd/3rd position; learning how to press deeper into the string and draw forth the sound) but one has to understand the instrument independent of the violin. The best thing to do is to listen to famous violists play and take lessons. You really need to treat it as its own instrument. Its unfortunate that it gets grouped together with the violin so often.

I have cracked many a viola joke in my day as a cellist but because I've worked with some brilliant people, I've really learned to appreciate the benefits of a good violist. (I'm primarily a chamber musician...a good violist is ESSENTIAL).

Good luck

Reply:Playing the viola is not that much different than playing the violin. It takes a little more drawing power in the bow and the fingerings can be a little different. Mostly the main difference is the clef sign; viola is written in alto clef.

I would love to play the viola but I find the larger size gives me a lot of back and shoulder problems so I have to stick with the violin.

Obviously, the big difference is the viola uses the alto clef so you will have to learn to read that.

Reply:violas are quite similar to violins in shape, except a little bigger. They don’t have an e-string, but have a low c-string instead. It’s held and played like a violin, except you have to press a little harder with your bow to get a good rich sound. also, violas are unique because they use alto clef.

Are there any songs for Viola alone written in the 1910-1929 in America?

It should be a song practical for an 18 year old in a high band to play. Finding sheet music for this time period that free for a solo viola is AWESOME!

Are there any songs for Viola alone written in the 1910-1929 in America?
I won't be at work for a couple days, so I can't check my bibliographies. And anything written after 1923 "that free" is highly unlikely, as it will be in copyright. But the two composers I'd be checking for possible repertoire are Rebecca Clarke and Quincy Porter.

I was just given a viola for my birthday, but I have no idea how to play it. Help?

I have played violin for about ten years, piano for nine, and guitar this past year. I really love the sound of the viola and I can't wait to learn it, but I need some kind of site that tells me how to read the music, the clef, the strings' names and the notes on them. I also need some music that would be easy for a beginner, although I can play any tune I wish on it because of violin. If anyone could post some helpful sites or advice or a place to get free music or help that would be great!

I was just given a viola for my birthday, but I have no idea how to play it. Help?
The fat part goes on the bottom.
Reply:A viola uses the alto clef; middle C is the middle line, so the lines (from the bottom) are F, A, C, E, F, and the spaces are G, B, D, F. Other than that, you just have to pracitce and get used to it - which you will do fairly quickly.

Enjoy!

Reply:Here is the reason the viola is supreme:

Middle C is directly in the middle of the staff in alto clef.

Middle C is essentially the middle most note you can play in 1st position.

Check out a few theory websites, thorough knowledge of all the clefs and how to transpose through them is required at a certain level of mastery.
Reply:Once upon a time when you bought a musical instrument , there were so many free lessons went with it. I was only 7yrs old when I got a piano accordian. Check out where the viola was bought from and ask them do they have those free lesson options for you. Good Luck.

Ha ha... I play viola, in case you couldn't tell.

Um, I don't know a site, but the clef looks kinda like a B and the middle line is a C (on the G string) and it's called the "Alto Clef" in case you didn't know that. Cause I think viola (besides if you count voice) is the only instrument that uses the alto clef (not the same as tenor, though I used to confuse them)

The strings are (top - bottom) A, D, G, C

Viola's super cool, and you should definitely learn it. The world needs more violists!!!

Oh, this might help too: http://www.viola.com/

Good luck!!!

Oh, and as for transposing, just take a note in alto clef, move it up a step to find it in trebble clef (though you'll still have to go down an octave)

I was wondering if someone can help me work out the value of a viola which recentlky came into my possesion from a late relative. It is a Karl Hofner "39.5 CM" made in Germany 1992. It is in pristine condition and never played or taken out of the case but I haven't got a clue what its worth

Slow but not too easy viola music?

I've been playing viola for more than 2 years, and I have to choose a few solos for my high school orchestra.

I like slow music, but I don't want it to be simple quarter notes or anything easy like that. I can play up to Suzuki volume 4, but I want to do some songs that aren't included in Suzuki.

Any good recommendations?

(By the way, good slow violin music works too. I can always transcribe that.)

Slow but not too easy viola music?
the only things that I can think of would probably be too advanced for you.

you could try the Bruch Romanze, but I'm pretty sure it's too hard.

it's really beautiful, andante, and passionate.
Reply:my father used to play for the RI philharmonic orchestra. He was second violinist only because he started to get arthritus in his hands.when he left them he could barly close his hands.what a sad day now that I think back.He always used to criticize how others would play. he might say something like,if he played a little slower it would sound better.the staccato notes are for people that can't play ,they just make you look that way.He was a stickler and one for practicing.I guess thats where I get it from.If you took a piece that was in quarter notes and added a few sixteenth notes to it and played it at tempo you could change the song , even though its the same one , and people would say, will you look at them play. yet you took a simple song and without changing the song , just modifying a few notes you have just made yourself the best violinist I know.
Reply:It sounds like you've made impressive progress in a relatively short time.

I have written an unaccompanied Elegy in versions for violin, viola, and cello. All have been very well received in concerts. I don't have a recording of the viola version, but you can hear the violin and cello versions here:

What is a good, inexpensive make and model viola to choose for beginners?

I want to teach myself to play the viola. I want an inexpensive one, but not one that sounds terrible and is made out of plastic. I want a dark, rich sonority. What do you viola players recommend?

What is a good, inexpensive make and model viola to choose for beginners?
OK. I don't know about the rest of the folks here, but unlike brass and woodwind instruments, good instruments are dependent on one thing...the quality of the maker. You can find a good student model amongst a hundred crappy ones. It just takes looking. I would recommend renting until you are sure you like it. Then go to a shop and try some out and see what you like before you buy. It's a big investment, no matter how inexpensive you try to find. Stay away from the mass produced ones, Chinese, e-bay, farmer market, etc. Good instruments are a lot like cars. The better the deal you think you find, the crappier and more expensive the repairs are to get it into working condition. Be patient, you'll find the one meant for you if you really want to play.

How hard will it be to learn to play the viola all over again?

I played the viola in elementary school for two years. I haven't picked the instrument up for six years, and am going to a high school where i will be in an orchestra again. How hard will it be for me to have to re-learn everything and catch up to all the others when I haven't touched my viola in six years? Also, will I need to buy a bigger viola, or can I still use the one that I had in elementary school? If I need to buy a new one, how much is that going to cost me?

How hard will it be to learn to play the viola all over again?
It's like falling off of a bicycle. You never forget that you don't want to. You will be a little rusty for awhile, but it will come back to you soon enough. You may be able to get started with the viola you already have, but I would sincerely recommend that you ask your teacher for advice concerning this matter. I don't know what size Viola you have now, and there is no way to give an opinion without knowing the size of your instrument, the length of your arm, and your body frame type.

You may be able to trade in the Viola you already have, and there is a slight chance that your school has an instrument available to borrow until you can resolve this. As for the issue of how much the Viola is going to cost, it depends on the value of your trade in. By the way, it may not be to your advantage to trade in the instrument at all. Sometimes you can actually sell it for more than you can trade it in for. Your teacher can advise you about this, or your grade school teacher might able to shed light here as well.

I put a few links below to help you. If you can't find a Viola anywhere else, try

the Cremona 150 or 175 to start off with. I am putting a link on here to show you the instrument. I have never dealt with the company before and I want you to know that.

I have dealt with this company. They have always treated me well, but the picture isn't nearly as pretty.

Here's another dealer. I have had very little contact with them, but the little I have had is satisfactory.

Hope this helps.
Reply:I'm not exactly sure how long it'll take, but since you've played before, it should take about half the time, if you remember things like finger positions, etc. As for catching up...I don't think it'll be easy. Highschoolers are VERY serious about their music, for the most part, and most have been playing for three to eight years. So, it'll take time, and LOTS of practice.

Need advice on a Viola for a student in 3rd year playing?
congrats on buying a stepup! i can't help you with places to physically buy and take home your instrument, but i'd recommened looking around online, like 123music.com, and don't be afraid to look at ebay- viola auctions are crazy good there. lots of brands make professional instruments, but ask your son first if he has a preference. most companies, just like car companies, have high quality child brands, like a luxury car company. i prefer knilling's brands, but don't be afraid to venture out of a familiarity zone to find a good viola. if you can't find an online site for your instrument's maker, or find reviews for it online, ask your child's instructor if they have heard of the brand. unlike clothing or shoes, a viola that is a discount or off brand is usually a very bad investment. also, when buying a good new/used/preloved (as i'd rather put it) viola, buy a good wood bow, with horsehair rather than a fiberglass bow. a good set of strings is just as essential. i can't think of the right name off the top of my head, but d'addario is a second runner and excellent choice of strings to the ever so popular "dominant" brand strings, made by yet another company that i can't think of off the top of my head. make sure you get a good case, and unless your kid likes them for some odd reason or another, avoid the black thermoplastic cases for your instrument like the plague! look for a good, courdra covered case with a soft lining, rectangular shape, a cut out body for the instrument, and a neck holder, with a string tube and space for a shoulder rest, rosin, and polishing supplies. also good to look for in a case is good connection points on the case- most cases have options for a single strap, hand carry from the short or long side, and a "backpack" like way of wearing it. also, there may be a music pocket on the front- it's always an added plus, but some teachers don't recommend it. i hope i've been thorough- please feel free to email me with questions!

Looking for Saxophone and Viola Duets.?

I'm not looking for those generic duets for miscellaneous instruments, but real "written for sax and viola" duets. Also, where to buy them? Thank you!

Looking for Saxophone and Viola Duets.?
Good luck. Since the saxophone is only a little over 150 years old, most of the music is not written for anoter instrument other than a saxophone. There are others out there, but they are few and far between. Also, because it is still fighting to be considered a classical style musical instrument, there is very little written to duet with the classical string instruments like a viola. Your best bet is to find flute, clarinet, or oboe with viola and then transpose to the key of the saxophone you are playing.

Do you play the viola?

The viola is an endangered instrument but also very beautiful and important. I am the principle violist of my local orchestra. Please spread the word that the world needs more violists.

Do you play the viola?
I have to agree i switched to viola from violin years ago, and there arent as many people who play the viola especially compared to violinist. I find that the sound is just so much better and richer. I felt more comfortable playing it, and i enjoyed the sound of the instrument far better then the violin.

I've gotta a VIOLA exam in 2 WEEKS...?

I've gotta a VIOLA exam in 2 WEEKS...?
You can get sheet music for scales over the internet, and they're usually in music books. However, you might not need the music, since they're pretty easy to sound out once you have the first note of the scale. The most important thing is to practice.
Reply:there is no easy way no quick way to learn scales, scales are the easist thing to play and the only way to learn them is to practice. don't be lazy. :-) good luck.

I'm selling a viola which has a chip on the paint on the front side. How much should I sell it for?

The viola still produces a good sound, and also the C string needs to be replaced. Personally I don't really need too much for anything.

I'm selling a viola which has a chip on the paint on the front side. How much should I sell it for?
Replace the string(s) and tune it, If possible touch up the paint chip. (it should be simple varnish). Ask at a music store what one is worth, they might even have the touch up materials for the finish.

You might want to call up local music schools to ask if you can post a notice there.

You could also look around a pawn shop to see what they are asking for used violas/violins. Price yourself accordingly. If you underprice you might not get much interest and are cheating yourself, if you price to high you reject sales, but you only need one real sale, right.

Good luck. It is difficult to give you an Idea of value not knowing where you are.

Ebay auctions are another price guide.

.
Reply:How much did you pay for it? Cut that in half, that's your starting selling price. Sound is all that matters, paint can be fixed and strings can be replaced. You may have to go lower than that depending upon your market, but if it is of good quality, don't budge too much, the right buyer will come along.

Rossetti

Cecilio

Campas

Bon Alegri

Allegro

Bestler

Vivace

Lauren

also, do you know where the best place to purchase a viola online is? Thanks for all the help!

What is the best VIOLA for beginners?
You should NEVER purchase a viola from ebay. Violas and violins have to be set up correctly so that the pegs fit and the soundpost and bridge are correctly positioned. Otherwise the viola will be hard to tune and difficult to play.

You should only buy a viola from a proper violin/viola shop. General music shops are no good either ; they usually know nothing about violas.

If you live in a country area with no access to any violin shops then look at Shars ; at least they know about string instruments.

You cannot just go on brands or price. You really have to play the viola to hear it and see if it is any good. Try to vist a violin shop and see what they have on hand.

Help with a new Viola?

I just got a new viola today.I havent played in almost 13 years and now it all seems so forgein to me.Im trying to play.I rosined up the bow but its not doing anything.I forgot do you need to score the rosin to get it to stick to the bow?For some reason its jsut not sticking after many trys.Help please!

Help with a new Viola?
I think you have forgotten that you need to prime your bow. The first time you put rosin on a bow it takes from 50 - 150 passes from the frog to the tip, to get enough rosin on the bow to vibrate the string. Afterwards, it only takes a few swipes, but that first time is a bit of work. Hold the rosin in approximately the same area where you would normally bow and get some practice in at the same time.
Reply:Yes, scratch the surface of the rosin with a knife or screwdriver to get it started and then spend about 5 minutes applying it to the bow until you get a sound when drawn across the strings.

From then on, just a few strokes per day will do but you need quite a bit to get things going. You have both a new bow and a new block of rosin so put plenty on.

Don't forget to wipe the excess rosin off your violin and bow after you finish practising.

I hope you enjoy your viola....welcome back !
Reply:A lot of people don't do this, but it works, I saw my old teacher do it once. Take a car key, mail key, whatever, and scratch on it to make the dust come off. If you use it right out of the case, it doesn't work. Just make a few scratch marks on it.
Reply:Yes, initially the first time, you should cross-hatch the top of the rosin with a sharp pin, just to get it started.

Should I play the viola after years with piano?

I know I have had a VERY similar question about whether or not I should play the oboe, but now, I am considering the viola like someone suggested. Just like my other quetion, there are many different factors that play into the situation. One, my parents are not too keen on spending money AT ALL, and I mean AT ALL. They want something at the lowest cost. An I know that these instruments can get a little pricy. Also, there aren't that many places around here where I may be able to get lessons, but since I am entering high school, that might help. I have to check on that, though. I would like opinions from all who have expeimented with instruments. I would also like tips on how to buy one and where to go for lessons in Whittier, CA.

Should I play the viola after years with piano?
1. It's easier to start any instrument if you have prior experience with other instruments.

I started viola with years of piano class and was already aware of note reading (violas play in alto, but knowing treble and bass help later on), rhythm, and general musicianship

2. Violas are pretty much within the middle hundred range.

An okay one is around 500-600.

3. You should practice around 15-20 minutes a day on different techniques if you want to get better. However, when you get better, 30-60 minutes is better

4. When the inch, they mean the body of the viola, not including the neck.
Reply:OK ... at first you should practice 15 minutes at a time ... since you are showing ambition spread it thru out the day .....there should be violin teachers in Whittier talk to them one of is bound to have played the viola (probably paid for college that way) you could find a decent viola from 400 to 600 dollars Chinese ... you want to make sure you bring someone with you that knows string instruments to find one that is a bargain and playable .... (i play in order of start dates, cello, guitar, bad piano, recorder (SATB), violin, viola)
Reply:WOW!!! you seem pretty confident and that is great. But coming from the piano which is such a happy interment and then going to the viola which is such a depressing interment is kinda wierd. But if you really want to do it then go for it you will probally be great.

Where can i find a quality, new viola?

i played violin for 10 years, and just switched to viola. im in a high school orchestra and i need my own viola. any suggestions of where to find one?

Where can i find a quality, new viola?
I've had the best success finding musical instruments by talking to my school instructors and private teachers and asking if they know anyone who is selling their instrument. This is a good way to get reliable, sturdy instruments, if you are willing to take a little bit of scruff in exchange for a lower price. However, you asked where you might get a "quality, new" instrument. The music companies I trust for such a requirement are Groth, Schmitt, and Musician's Friend. The former two, in my experience, have intelligent, competent employees who will get you exactly what you need, nothing more, nothing less. I still say, though, that you will get more for your money when you buy through a local musician, and you get the opportunity to develop a useful relationship with an experienced musician. But, it seems that many musicians are not limited by the same monetary constraints I've found myself under. Best of luck - the cellos may very well drown you out.
Reply:My favorite store is Brook Mays Music Company. That's where I got my violin.

They have several high quality brands for good prices, and have equally good rental and used brands.

A question about Twelfth Night (Olivia and Viola)?

Viola and Olivia have the same letters in the name, only arranged differently. I forget what you call this (an anagram?). Why does Shakespeare do this? They are not the only female characters, and although they are "linked" in a way, that could be said to many others. Even if they were main characters, which I believe them to be...why would he make their names like that?

I'm wondering chiefly because I'm thinking about writing an essay on the similarities and differences between Viola and Olivia, and if Shakespeare wanted us to see some sort of similarity or connection too.

Can it be done?

A question about Twelfth Night (Olivia and Viola)?
Well you can definitely say that there are similarities and differences between Viola and Olivia. I'm not sure about their names being complete anagrams of one another, but I do say that the parallel of their names is probably no mistake. They are definitely set as "foils" (contrasting characters when set side-by-side in comparison)

CGDA...just like a violin--only it has no high E-and has that low C string...

I love viola--it's got such a nice pleasant , mellow sound...It can be classical-then take a weekend off for a bluegrass festival-and you can fiddle people socks off...Started last in 4the grade--graduated high school first chair viola...

If you learn Viola--you can also figure out mandolin--which is WAY cool (listen to Nichol Creek!)

I put a link for you-it has a fingering chart..C is the bottom-low fat string--A is the highest..by high school-you will have A memorized-and you may find yourself humming A--when the orchestra tunes up...and if you don't watch it--they may tune to YOU..like they did me...I got asked to hum A for the entire orchestra...I don't know if that was embarrassing--or funny...maybe lets go with funny.

My last concert--I hummed A with a kazoo. YOU are going to have fun..!

My daughter plays viola now--if I behave I get to play hers.

Her high school has the Seniors help beginners-and they give inexpensive lessons to 4th graders..which is really a neat way to get new kids started..I also recommend you ask your director for recommendations for an adult who give lessons.

Have fun with Eine Kleine Nacht Music...it was my favorite. 30 years later(!) I still know the viola part...

Oh--Listen to Garrison Kieller on Prarie Home Companion...The CD on "Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra"...it's fairly funny..

Music and Art are just like any other subject--just like Math-Baseball-----THE MORE YOU DO IT THE BETTER YOU GET...

Talent never fall like Manna on any one--you have to work to get it...fortunately--music and art--like base ball--are fun...Math...well--that's what calculators are for.

Have fun!

I have a 15" viola made by Robert Laumann of Budapest in 1899. It is in excellent shape. Is it valuable?

It is the smallest full size viola made (15" - 17"). As a violin player I can play it Appears to have very good tonal qualities.

I purchased it from a Hungarian gypsy musician in the eightees who needed money. Now I am wondering whether I was taken.

Any information about the Hungarian luthier would be also welcome.

I have a 15" viola made by Robert Laumann of Budapest in 1899. It is in excellent shape. Is it valuable?
From what I can find within a few minutes of searching, it appears you have an instrument by a known maker and it *could* be valuable. Instrument value is affected by the following, in rough order of importance:

1) Maker's name. Of course this is only if it can be authenticated. There are a lot of fakes out there and lesser-known makers are often targets of fakes.

2) Condition

3) Sound quality

Robert Laumann is a known name but I was unable to find any past auction prices for his violins or violas on Mastronet.com.

I did find a listing for one of his instruments for sale for $20,000, however, there's no way to know if it sold or for how much.

I would suggest taking the instrument to a good stringed instrument dealer in one of the major cities and ask them to appraise it. But do some research first to determine if the dealer is reputable - many are not.
Reply:I definitely agree with their choice. I was one of the two voters.

IFrom the limited data available it appears that his instruments retail at $10,000 + assuming good to excellent condition.

Despite its size, the viola has a surprisingly voluminous and impressive tone.

. Report It

Reply:because the viola is so small its not going to match in tthe tone quality of say a 16" viola. This is because the sound boxes are close together and can't vibrate quite possibly. It could be worth something so do your research an if you ddecide to sell it bring it to a credible violin shop that would help you in selling it for a qualified price. i haven't really heard of this maker much but see what you can find out there
Reply:Call the curator of an art museum, not only can they tell you what it's worth, they may be interested in purchasing the instrument.

How to mount a mute on a viola bridge?

I'd just bought a mute for my daughter’s viola yesterday, but I don't know the mute should contact with the strings or not? If it shouldn't then how does it "mute" the sound?

I bought the exactly same type of mute that shown on the picture below: http://www.lightandmatter.com/html_books...

How to mount a mute on a viola bridge?
You have asked this question in the wrong category; try posting in the "Arts and Humanities", "Performing Arts" category. I did look at the picture, and if I had to hazard a guess, I would say that it damps the vibration from the strings to the bridge, thereby reducing the amplitude.

In the percussion part, I'm just a beginner in the snare drum and intermediate in the bass, timpani, cymbals, and auxiliary (depending on what type of auxiliary it is). But I'm and expert in the keyboard percussion. I'm just a junior in high school and I'm already on the college level. I've been playing mallets since 6th grade and this year, I'm learning to play with a 4 mallet grip. I'm hoping that my skills take me down the road to scholarships and job offers.

Good Luck to You! (if you're still in school, I mean.)

I love it! :]
Reply:Piano, violin, viola, harp, and I sing. Piano is my major instrument (I'm studying piano performance at a local conservatory), followed by violin only because I've played it for the longest out of the rest of my instruments and done grade 8. I love all my instruments. But I think I like singing more than violin...so I might consider changing my 2nd instrument to voice, though I won't dare bank on being a professional (I don't even know if I've the potential to).

Is it too late to pick up the violin or viola again?

I started the violin when i was 6 years old, but i stopped playing when i was 11 or 12 years old. I'm 16 now, well 17 in a months time, and I would really like to pick up the violin again. However, I'm really sure whether to re-start the violin again, or to start the viola. The reason for my interest in the viola is because I really love the violas depth and thickness of sound. I have my doubts whether the violin can produce a warm sound as well, as I never played a full size violin, I only ever reached a 3/4 violin, but then of course I stopped. So since I've never played a full size violin, I don't really know what the sound is like. I guess I won't really know until I've played both a full size violin and a viola, but is it too late for me to play? Will my fingers be slow? Can I do anything to gradually get my fingers to pick up the pace? Have I been apart from the strings for too long?

Is it too late to pick up the violin or viola again?
Never, ever too late.
Reply:I wouldn't advise paying the $400+ for a viola like what was suggested if your just starting again. There are alot of great resources on the internet with free video tutorials to get you back in the swing again. Playing musical instruments again after a long period of time is alot like riding a bike - it will all come back to you. If you do start up again with the viola or violin, I would suggest starting out with a cheap violin or cheap viola. http://www.musicalmart has nice viola outfits at about $109 (http://musicalmart.net/shop/index.php?cP... and nice violins for under $50 (http://musicalmart.net/shop/index.php?cP... Good luck!
Reply:You won't be as good as you were. You'll just have to accept that. However - it's amazing how fast you can pick it up again. You have a good background in the instrument - 6 years learning at the fastest speed (children learn faster than adults) so even though you've not played it for 4 years you will still be able to play it to a reasonable standard. Your fingers will probably be pretty slow, but they'll be able to find the right notes, even if a bit slowly.

The thing to remember is you know HOW to play the instrument - now you just need to get the technique back into your "muscle memory" so you can play once more without thinking. The best way to do that would be through technical exercises (including scales etc) and slow repetitous practice.

As for which instrument to go for it's entirely up to you - but I'd go for the viola first (as that's the one you know best) and then start the violin again.

So in short, go for it! If you don't start again now you'll probably wish you had, and the longer you wait the harder it will be to start again.

Violin and/or viola tips?

I am a twelve year old girl. I've played the violin for 4 years, and the viola for about 2 and a half. I really enjoy playing them for fun, but I dread practicing. I hate it. I usually do about 20 minutes on each maybe 4 days a week. Sounds 'hard', huh? Yeah, right. I am frustrated with myself that I don't like to practice. I know not many people like to, but still! If someone could give me some suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

Also, is there anyone on Yahoo Answers that is my age (12, or so) that plays either or both of those instruments? Will you contact me if you feel like it? I really enjoy meeting people my age with some of the same interests. (-:

Thanks for your help, everybody! Don't forget, 10 points goes to the person with the best answer, so make it good! Thank you again.

Violin and/or viola tips?
i play viola, and piano, so i know what it's like playing two instruments!

i am actually only a couple years older than you so we're kinda around the same age...i like viola enough to play it in college some...

hmm, practicing is always tough, but it becomes easier if it's a routine. i always start by playing a good warm up song (something you're good at and like) then do the scales and etudes and then the piece. if you're feeling lazy, i just skip to the hard parts and work on those couple measures, when you got the hard measures down, give yourself a 5 minute break and then do more

i hope that helps; it was one giant run-on, but yeah...
Reply:Thanks for your help! I practiced yesterday-for the first time in over 2 months! I'll be getting back to regular practicing in a couple weeks.

Thanks again. Report It

Reply:Hello,

I am a violin/viola teacher. It sounds like you are in a major rut. It happens to all of us. You are right that not many people enjoy practicing, but it usually helps if you have a goal to work toward, like a recital or performance. what helps me, also, is belonging to an orchestra or taking lessosn. It sounds like youare doing a fair amount of practicing. I mayself have never liked practicing, but I still managed to get into music school and now I have a college degree in violin and I am a professional musician and teacher. If it is something you really want to do, yuo will practice just to be able to play, if that makes any sense. Otherwise, you can still play for fun without being a "serious" musician. Good luck!
Reply:I don't know anything about violins but someone on my street is a professional strings teacher he teaches his daughters my nextstore neighbor and lots of other people I know I probably didn't help you sorry.
Reply:No it doesn't sound crazy b/c I played when I was your age and then joined a symphony. I hated pratice with a passion! Even when I started to play well I still hated to practice. Just remember "practice makes perfect" Although now I do not play and I would do anything to play again and complain while I practiced! I miss it terribly. Sorry I am not a twelve year old but wish I was again! Good luck with the practicing.
Reply:I play viola and piano and I'm a little older than you. What pieces are you playing for viola right now?

You could ask your teacher for some pieces you like, that usually motivated me a lot for piano.

What specific problems are you having? Like, do you like playing but just don't like practicing, or are you just 'not so great' at it?

Do you have any friends that play instruments? You guys could get together and play as an ensemble. It's really fun and helps you a lot.

I have helped a lot of people on their playing--I could give you some tips if you would like towards some stuff.

Hope this helps a bit.

Flying with a viola... any suggestions?

I'll be flying from America to Europe this summer with my viola. Any suggestions relating to the flight or any other aspect of travelling with an instrument would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Flying with a viola... any suggestions?
What's' they said

Musical Instruments

Small musical instruments may be carried on-board the aircraft providing they meet existing carry-on size requirements and fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Case dimensions may not exceed 45 linear inches (width+length+height), except for guitars which may be brought on board only if they can be safely stowed in an overhead bin or approved stowage location in the cabin. The instrument is considered the passenger's one allowed carry-on bag.

A personal item is allowed in addition to the instrument.
Reply:Some depends on what else you are flying with. Clothes and toothpaste can be replaced but your instrument cannot be.

Call the airline well beforehand and get the ins and outs but don't rest there. Get to the airport a bit early and speak to the head person (or the customer relations person) and make it all clear. If you have to check it that is fine but it will be registered as delicate. Meaning if it is broken or damaged I know exactly who to blame later.

If you do that often they will go through everything with you and stow it somewhere in the cabin. The crew will understand what is going on and often a representative from the airline will meet you at the gate in order to show "customer service".

As an aside. If you play your cards right often they will bump a person up to a higher seat class to make sure that you are totally fine. If you are travelling with a bunch of people don't share this. All will be anyway but it would be nice to get a bit of special attention.

And of course spend the $30 or whatever to get travel insurance.

What Characteristics does Viola (the character from twelfth night) have??

i got the lead roll in our play twelfth night. i have to write a character anaylisis. i would like to get your opinion on what you think some quilities Viola might have. i would really be greatful for answers from people who know the play pretty well

thanks!!

What Characteristics does Viola (the character from twelfth night) have??
The best way to write a character analysis is to list all the things that the character says about herself (that are true) and what all the other characters say about her that are true. Then check what she does in the play and draw conclusions as to what her personality is like from that.
Reply:I had to do the same thing, I just thought of her as brown curly hair [shortish] and young looking and short, but thats just me. Make her your own. Good Luck

There's a couple more places where you can find more things. I was a viola major (currentlying studying voice) and i still play avidly.

All the basic theory, and where the notes are on the instrument (see the link on the following page for finger tapes, and actually put tapes on your viola, use black electrical tape cut into thin strips, it blends into the neck well, and a little bit of rubbing alcohol will take the tiny bit of stickiness off when you are ready to take off the tapes)

Cello to the viola?

I have been playing the cello for 4 years but its getting so annoying to carry it around all the time because its heavy i have always loved to play the viola should i make the switch? would it be hard??? I have orchestra in school though since its summer do you think i could switch and catch up by september?

Cello to the viola?
Well, the strings are tuned to the same pitches, just one octave higher. You WILL have to learn to read C clef (alto clef). You can get a head start by going to www.practicespot.com and doing some worksheets. Your teacher will help you find a viola that is the right size; unlike the other strings, there is no standard size, and they are measured in inches. If your arms are long enough, you can get a longer one (over 16, even close to 17 inches) that will make adjusting to the new finger positions easier - they will not feel SO tiny!

In the meantime, get yourself some easy things in alto clef, and try playing them WAAAY up in a high or thumb position on the cello, to get used to the spacing. The strings might be hard to depress there, but it might be an experiment that helps you learn to read alto clef.
Reply:The difficulty will come from the smaller period between pitches on the viola fingerboard, and the shallower action. Also, the viola speaks much quicker than the cello, especially in the low notes -- so that will take some getting used to when adjusting your bowing technique. At least you won't have to learn a new tuning!! (Just remember that it's an octave higher :-D).

Some of those larger double-stops are easier on the viola!!

I think it would not take you long to adjust to these difficulties -- but I would surely not totally give up on the cello.
Reply:you too .... I'm not abandoning cello but I am playing the viola ... unless your school has a phenomenal music program you should be able to catch up as long as you practice everyday ... the hardest part is learning that alto clef ... everything else is just simple adjustments .... and the vibrato is totally different so get help with that ..... OOOPS forgot the bowing difference you can lighten up on the bowing and still get a good full sound ... also think with the alto clef that all the notes went up a whole step it helps with the reading
Reply:Go for it and you'll know.
Reply:As a violist, I say, the more the merrier!
Reply:I think cello to the viola would be a little difficult, but if you've been playing for four years already, it might not be too hard...meanning you might have learned enough musically to take on that challenge. Personally I play the violin, i started in the fourth grade and when I got to my sophmore year of high school they decided they needed more violists so I volunteered to learn. It was a little easier for me I think since I already played the violin and they are a bit more similar, but I picked it up pretty quick so you might not have that hard of a time.

I say go for it. The worst that could happen is that you end up realizing you don't like it and go back to playing cello which personally I always found as a beautiful instrument.
Reply:You will need to learn the alto clef , which is pretty easy since you are used to reading more than one clef ;)The other thing you may struggle with is the fingering pattern is different then the cello . You have enough music experience on the cello that switching viola should not be a problem for you . If I were you I would pick it up now , so by the term you will be quite comfortable with the instrument. Have fun....
