Switching from violin to viola?

Ok, I have been playing violin for..eh.. about 2 1/2 months. I do enjoy it, I am pretty good at it, but then came the viola. I've always loved deeper music, lower notes. I saw the viola and thought it would be perfect for me. Is this too hard to try, or should I do it now before I get really good at violin?

Switching from violin to viola?
The viola is alot like the violin..so plaing either or shouldn't be too much of a difference. If you would rather play the viola play that. You will succeed more at what you like to do and play rather than doing the least liked one.
Reply:Well, If you're thinking about switching already, I'd refrain from buying a great violin.

There's more money in viola anyway. Even if you're not a music major, many schools will give you money to play viola in their orchestra.
Reply:I switched from the violin to the viola for the same reasons. I love the deep, smooth sound the viola makes. It's not that big of a deal to switch. The playing techniques are pretty similar.

Now I've moved on to the clarinet, though, and I forget basically everything about stringed instruments.
Reply:just do it

talk to your instructor

and tell them you like how it sounds better

and would love to try that instead

they are pretty close as far as instruments go

so it wouldnt be like going from trombone to guitar

so go try it
Reply:What about a 5-string viola? Best of both worlds.
Reply:there basically the same instrument. the only diffrence is that the violin has an E string and a viola doesnt because its a lower sound. so the violin has G, D, A, E %26amp; the viola C, G, D A
Reply:nono
Reply:I suggest you pick it up as a side project. You can be really good at both! Lots of violinists double on viola and vice versa.

Borrow one or rent one, buy a beginners method book, and test drive it for awhile. You'll have to learn alto clef and get used to the finger positioning, but if you like it, you can always switch and make the violin your second instrument.

I encourage you to try it out!
Reply:well violin is totally different from viola on violin the open strings are : G D A E and viola: C G D A so switch now if you want to switch.
Reply:I think you can switch, I switched from viola to violin and my conductor said it was o.k.
