I just bought a brand new viola, 15" and the seller told me to rosin for 20-25 minutes because its a brand new bow. I did and when I tried to play, the bow was rubbing the strings and not making the proper sound. I tried tuning the instrument but it still doesnt work. I tightened the bow but it still doesn;t work. Does anyone know why my instrument is not playing the sound properly?
Viola Tuning?
Okay. Look at your rosin. Is it shiny or scratched up? If it is shiny, you need to scratch it up with some sandpaper to get it going. If it is scratched up, scratch it up some more and put some more rosin on. I find that the synthetic hair bows need a lot of rosin to produce any sound. Is your bow horse hair or synthetic?
Take the instrument and bow to your orchestra teacher if that doesn't help. The strings might be too loose or something. Hope that helps!
Reply:do what the guy told you. you have to rosin it for a long time at first or else it won't grasp the strings, and hence, won't make a sound.
